After the summer solstice, the weather becomes hot and humid. Especially during the rainy season, this environment can easily cause white tea to absorb moisture and spoil. Therefore, it’s important to store white tea properly to maintain its quality.

Keep It Dry

White tea is highly sensitive to humidity. In a moist environment, it can easily absorb water from the air, leading to mold or quality loss. Always store white tea in sealed containers to prevent moisture exposure.

Avoid placing it near kitchens, bathrooms, or other damp areas. Choose a dry, well-ventilated room for storage.

The ideal humidity level for storing white tea should be below 45%. You can use a hygrometer to monitor the conditions. During especially humid periods, dehumidifiers or air conditioners can help maintain a stable environment.

Also, keep the tea away from walls and floors to avoid moisture transfer from the ground.

Control Temperature

High temperatures accelerate chemical reactions inside the tea leaves, such as oxidation of polyphenols and amino acids, which may affect flavor and aroma. The optimal storage temperature for white tea is around 25°C.

During hot summers, you can use air conditioning to lower the temperature. However, do not store white tea in the refrigerator, as fridges are often humid and contain strong odors that can damage the tea. Cold temperatures also slow down natural aging processes.

Store Away from Light

Ultraviolet light can break down nutrients in tea and cause off-flavors like a “burnt” taste. Therefore, store white tea in a dark place and avoid using transparent glass jars that let in light.

Avoid Strong Odors

White tea easily absorbs surrounding smells. Keep it away from strong-smelling items like perfumes, cleaning products, or medicines. A clean, odor-free environment is essential for preserving its original flavor.

Use Suitable Containers

Choosing the right storage container is key to long-term preservation. We recommend a triple-layer packaging method: aluminum foil bags, food-grade plastic bags, and cardboard boxes. This combination provides excellent protection against moisture and odors.

Portioning for Easy Use

To reduce frequent exposure to air and humidity, divide your white tea into portions for 1–2 months of use. Store these smaller amounts in sealed bags or metal tins. This minimizes contact with outside air and helps preserve freshness.

By following these simple but effective steps, you can protect your white tea’s quality and enjoy its evolving flavor over time, developing a richer, smoother character with age.
